Just got the Picstart Plus Processor upgrade kit with the PIC18FXXXX flash processor, installed it and uploaded the latest firmware 42003. I expected that I could now program any old or new PIC with MPLAB. Well a PIC16F877 worked OK, so did a PIC16F88 and the old PIC17C44 that the old firmware was stored in. Then I tried a PIC16F57 and Picstart refuses to program this chip. If I read a new or erased chip it finds all zeros instead of 0FFh and says it is code protected. If I try to program it, the Picstart takes forever and then announces that all locations are zeros and the part is code protected. I turned off code protection in the config bits. It actually acts as if the chip weren't there. If I remove it the same events occur. The PIC16F57 is a new part but MPLAB V6.60 says Picstart can program it. I was happy to find it because it would replace the obselete PIC16C57 in an 11 year old instrument without any hardware or software changes. Now I'm back to square one. Anyone else having problems with the Picstart upgrade?
