This merely suggests ways to make a shortish link, perhaps 10m
or so with simple LEDs. Obviously if you use an IR laser or LEDs
with better optics (such as reflectors / sunlight filtering) or FO cable
then the distance will be correspondingly greater

You'll have to roll your own data code too, the IR is just a carrier

Is this a from-scratch design or do you want to use proprietary-
coded IR transmitters ? There are a lot of web resources for things
like RC5
