The situation was pretty abysmal as simply installing the driver for a new piece of hardware could take an otherwise stable machine and make it very flaky. Fortunately, those problems had already been fixed (for the most part) well before even XP was released. Oh, and a few quick words on nomenclature. A lot of people seem to use the term "NT" to refer to versions other than 2K and XP.
