FYI: ---- No need to be alarmed, but I just did not think this would happen this soon to my good "friend" in the PIC18 family -- the PIC18F452: The following PIC18 PICmicros have been labeled "mature" by Microchip, and as such, are not recommended for new designs: PIC18F242 PIC18F252 PIC18F442 PIC18F452 <=== My buddy! :( Like I said, there is no reason to be alarmed; they obviously will not disappear overnight if Microchip's past practices are followed for these parts. Microchip recommends the following as the 'Recommended Design-In Device' replacements: MATURE REPLACEMENT ------ ----------- PIC18F242 ===> PIC18F2420 PIC18F252 ===> PIC18F2520 PIC18F442 ===> PIC18F4420 PIC18F452 ===> PIC18F4520 Actually, this is not a bad deal since the new parts have more features and *might* even be cheaper. My hope is that the errata issues of the replacement parts are fewer and less severe than the mature products they are replacing. I'll look into this. I used to recommend the PIC18F452 as a good PIC18F workhorse for beginners wanted to delve into the PIC18 architecture -- especially those migrating from a PIC16F877A. I guess my new recommendation is the PIC18F4520 (when it is available through the distributors, that is).
