Excuse me if this is trivial, I'm a software guy.

I've a circuit that is powered by external power (a wall mart with a
7805) and i want to add betteries for backup, so when the external power
is on the circuit should run on it, and when it gets disconnected it
should still keep up running on the batts.

Can somebody guide me on how to do this?
