Hi. Depending what update speed you need for each I/O, a bunch of cheap 74HC-whatever SI/PO shiftsregs with latch, could also be an option. That's is if all (or most) I/O's are outputs and the additional PIC's just are used as I/O-extenders. Then there are also the MCP23016 true I/O extenders from Microchip...
