How about a glow-in-the dark floor, with 'ants' with high-intensity LEDs or 
something?

It would have to be dark though, or use red ambient light and green glowing 
paint and some optical filtering at the ant...

Reusable, no refilling of evaporating ink, not as much energy needed as to 
heat marbles... plus you can see the tracks too ;o)

I don't know how long the afterglow persists...
