Being able to finely judge and control your braking is a fine skill, and excellent when it works. Worst case road, a tyre that has a mild relative flat spot, gravel, oil, etc MAY make it not work when you need it most. 'Modulation" will ALWAYS work better than lockup and is self recovering. It's one thing of course to say "pump your brakes" and another to actually practice rapid modulation under heavy braking while turning on an adverse surface. It does take practice. Not something you learn at the moment you first need it.
