Critiquing my own post: Actually, that's probably pushing the meaning a little too far. Bot here means essentially "except with" or "except using" ie unless you are wearing a glove. The sense is that the owner of the motto has "claws" and is not to be treated carelessly or without due respect. And - the usage of "bot" above doesn't seem to appear in any dictionary that I have consulted so far tonight :-). (Even though it is definitely an old motto).
