The only schematics would be in a Tek service manual, and that would
probably cost as much as the serial module.

I think you will find that there is quite a bit in the serial module, as in
more than just a UART. They do seem to put some smarts in there to handle
handshaking and the like, without loading down the main processor. It may
even have enough processing power to handle the command structure that is
used when connecting to labview and other similar control programs, again
without burdening the main processor with the overhead, and development cost
of the software.
