And I tried to buy some old library card catalog drawers, but someone else got them first :-( Antique stores ARE a possibility; just cause something is labeled antique doesn't necessarily mean it's more expensive that equivalent new furniture. Do you have an Ikea store near you? A lot of their stuff is pretty neat looking, in a modern sort of way, and it tends to be very reasonably priced...
