For example: if you want to trigger at the beggining of the first bit on a serial data stream and not at the start bit beggining. You would set a 2 stage trigger to trigger when the signal goes from 1 to 0 and then from 0 to 1... That will happen exactly at the end of the start bit and the beggining of the first bit. I am not sure if that is clear enough but the basic idea is to be able to trigger when you have a set of events in consecutive moments of the signal you are trying to looking at.
