Ever hear of the 78P05, excellent regulator, full thermal overload protection (temp sensor in the same silicon as output) Safe Operating Area protection, Short circuit protection. 10 Amp continuous 14.1 amps peak. But it is only available in the 5 volt version, however a pair of resistors will let you set it to anything from 5 to 32 volts output. Cost same as a pass transistor, but is virtually free from burning out.
