It's not so much not reading specs as trying to get the right specs for the crystals I find and trying to interpret them correctly without being an EE myself :) I'm a software guy, and reasonably good with digital logic circuits but I'm pretty rusty with analog these days, and was never all that good with resonant circuits. But always willing to learn... So I'm just looking for a rule of thumb to start with and hints for where to go to find out more. I'll get the appnotes people have suggested and read from there.
