Without the gold (just nickel plate) is pretty good too. Silver has serious corrosion problems in some environments and a lot of cheap holders use something more like brass, for the spring- and once it gets bent past the elastic limit it becomes unreliable. My old Kodak digital camera (made by Chinon) has about the best AA battery holder I've seen (custom, of course). If you drop the battery in, it will bounce up about 1/3 of its length.
