Hard gold plated phosphor bronze contacts would probably be the way to go.
Battery contacts seem to be inherrently unreliable though IME. I suspect
because it's very difficult to get a gas tight connection between the
metals, especialy as most holders let the cells move around somewhat.  For
high reliability, a battery with welded cells and a proper connector must be
the way to go.
