I have discovered that if the chlorine or bromine level of a hottub is high, those components will bleach out the dyes used on the Ph and other tests, leading to unreadable and/or non-sensical results. If you have one of the fancier liquid-based test kits, you can use some chlorine neutralizer before doing the Ph tests, but if the chlorine level is up over the max of the chlorine test, the rest of those 'strip' tests can be useless...
