full auto does work well on large vehicles that can carry thousands of rounds, or 100's of thousands. i forget where, but i saw a military guy discussing full auto weapons and he was of the opinion that they were mostly useful when one was ambushed, the side that can maintain the highest firing rate often wins as shooting is usually somewhat random in that case. of course they are also used for suppression fire, i.e. keeping the enemy from getting any closer or moving in general. that's one of the uses for full auto .50 caliber rifles as you can shoot miles away if you aren't trying to be terribly accurate and can make a zone that the enemy can't cross except in heavily armored vehicles.
