Could you point me in the direction of some of this free video editing/compression software for the Mac? I'm in the process of switching from PC to Mac, and I recently bought a powerbook that's faster just looking at clockspeed than any PC I have. I= t should be at least twice as fast at video work as the PC but I can't find any useful software (which seems to be the Mac's life story) so I still d= o my video work on the PC. It seems like all I use the powerbook for is a wireless internet terminal and portable DVD player, mainly because of lac= k of software. Thanks, Jason From: "Philip Stortz" Sent: Saturday, September 04, 2004 5:46 AM if you are mostly looking for dvd and audio, i'd seriously consider an older macintosh. this is one area where they are a lot faster than a pc. i know they are a lot faster at converting video to a compressed mpg. much of the software is free. the os is no problem for anyone who can use windows (i've used both, i have to say i love the mac os, but i'm not crazy about some of the hardware things apple has done, or the "new" price, but the used price can be pretty reasonable). i know it's not what you asked for, i'm suggesting that you broaden your search criteria. if you are only going to play video, i'm not sure you need a computer at all. if you are going to edit video, then i'd definitely recommend a mac and the mac software available for video editing. for some other things, i would recommend a pc.
