A PC monitor doesn't have any "text mode". That screen needs some video card or similar to produce anything reasonable. If you'd like a "screen" to write characters to, get a used "VT" compatible or emulating async terminal. The best are of course the original VT screens from Digital Equipment Corp (DEC), such as the VT100 to the VT520. They can be found quite sheap today. Alan B.
