As a parallel port programmer developer I can tell you that the most critical thing is to keep your cables short. Unless the design has specifically addressed the issue of transmission line effects, you'll end up with a perfectly wired board that doesn't work. So whatever design you tackle, be sure to test with a short parallel cable. BTW what chips are you planning on programming?
