>>I *never* give salary history -- it only gives them an idea of how low to start the salary negotiations.<< Exactly - there is no other use for such information, a fact I used to great advantage when I was about 3 years into the workforce. I was making 'okay' money for a 24 year old, but felt like I was underpaid & so when a prospective employer asked how much I was making 'now' I inflated the figure by $18k and gave it to him with a perfectly straight face. He added $6k to that and that was his offer. I made a $24k raise in one otherwise lateral job move. Which really only shows that I /was/ underpaid at my other job, but then too it was my first 'real' job and I was sure comfortable there... I've been in it long enough now that (a) I know what I'm worth, and (b) I know they know what I'm worth. If the basis for what they'll pay me is what I'm making now, then they are either negotiating in bad faith or ignorant. In either case it's irrelevant, none of their business & if they MUST have it then I don't want to work there - or maybe I'll just lie again. >>As for a driver's record, I'd ask "why?" before doing anything of the sort.<< Again none of their business unless you're a delivery driver of some sort - or if you often travel to customer's or vendor's sites (in which case they could be liable for your driving under the doctrine of respondeat superior). As a side note: It is ILLEGAL for an employer to pull a credit report, driving history or do any other background check without your written consent. -- http://www.piclist.com hint: PICList Posts must start with ONE topic: [PIC]:,[SX]:,[AVR]: ->uP ONLY!
