Finally hit on the golden connections! I got the "ground loop isolator" from the rat shack and the RCA cables to hook it up (the local surplus place is closed sundays) and hooked it up. First try was without the PC coupled to the car 0v and the racket was back. Replacing this cable fixed that. Then the sound was very faint, so I checked the connections and in the process touched both left and right signal grounds together and the sound got louder, but sounded hollow. So I got my pliers to see if they needed a good solid connection to make it better, but that didn't really improve it much until I then (by accident) touched the EQ metal case with the pliers, and the sound cleared right up, what I consider the right volume, no background noise at all (even with no input) just perfect. So I got the iron out and made this connection permanent (trapping one end under a screw head). It dawned on me that the case is mounted to a piece of plastic dash and so has no reference at all, the EQ designer probably assumed it would be at the cars 0v. So at the end of it it works and sounds great, now all I need to do is build the front panel (waiting on parts from mouser) and finish it out. Thanks for all the help guys!
