Oh yeah, that stuff is great. Assuming we are thinking of the same stuff, I believe it is called 3M Scotchcast... They have a bewildering assortment of different products in this line: I have used #2130, which is listed as "Flame retardant compound", so may handle the heat. This is widely used by oceanographers to seal the power cables for deep sea instruments. The unipack size B seals a splice about 1.25" diameter x about 5" long, so you may need the larger size.
