Probably.  the big difference is that 3.5inch HDs usually require 12V
for their motors, while the laptop drives are 5V only.  If you have a
handy source of 12V, you shouldn't have a problem.

In what way is the screen broken?  I actually managed to FIX a laptop
screen by carefully taking it apart and replacing the CCFL backlight
bulb with one from a surplus place.  I was pretty proud of myself :-)

There's some standardization of LCD screens, but not a whole lot,
especially over several generations of laptop.  You might be able to
find something on ebay.
