Using a desktop hard-drive shouldn't be hard.  Look at
the pinouts (link below).  They are exactly the same
except for the last few pins which provide power.  Not
sure if the desktop drive needs more current than a
laptop one (probably) but it shouldn't matter much.

I believe I saw some serial port LCDs on the net that
you could use as your display for a car mp3 player or
something.  They're pretty cheap I think too.
