They are exactly the same except for the last few pins which provide power. Not sure if the desktop drive needs more current than a laptop one (probably) but it shouldn't matter much. http://www.l8r.net/technical/t-ide.shtml I believe I saw some serial port LCDs on the net that you could use as your display for a car mp3 player or something.
