Not that much, if the slaves are able to start echoing the incomming
message as soon as the second byte is being received.

I've missed the beginning of this thread, but some Sony cameras use this
kind of RS232 ring and a protocoll runing in such ring, callded VISCA ,
as you can see from page 39 of the following PDF.
