My theory on the 50+ for mars missions would mainly be due to radiation induced cancer risk. If the mars mission causes you to have cancer in 30 years well from 50 that "aint so bad" as if you send a 20 year old and they get it at 50. But with one in 3 men and 1 in 4 women getting cancer at some stage, well the odds arent that bad. worth the payoff. (any guesses as to which age bracket i'm closer too ;->) > -----Original Message----- > From: pic microcontroller discussion list > [mailto:PICLIST@MITVMA.MIT.EDU]On Behalf Of Russell McMahon > Sent: Tuesday, June 22, 2004 11:27 PM > To: PICLIST@MITVMA.MIT.EDU > Subject: Re: [OT:] SpaceShipOne makes a successful flight! > > > What impressed me greatly was that, when given the choice of many many > thousands of pilots who would happily have flown the craft for free, they > chose a 63 year old as their preferred choice for their first > Space attempt. > I've also seen it suggested that the first astronauts to Mars are > liable to > be 50+ years old.
