THose DEW line transmitters *WOULD* literally cook birds in flight. I knew a guy in the military that worked on them. They would have to get rid of a pile of dead birds every few weeks. Of course, a tall glass building does the same thing, birds whack into the glass and fall to thier doom in a stupor. I knew another guy that worked on a large line that communicated with subs with low frequency RF ( ~~68 hZ IIRC). The antenae was a long buried cable miles long. He built a device to detect faults in the cable, however when he went to test it at the site, he said you didn't need his device. All you needed was ten barefoot guys. If there was a fault in the line, in a few seconds of hopping around hollering, all of them would end up facing the break, otherwise they got zapped through their feet. So when they finally get around to beaming microwaves down from space stations - what will happen if you get in the path of the beam? ZZZZZZPT! We're talking 10kw peak power Xband magnetrons here, at maybe 20 feet as you pass the trooper. All it takes is ONE pulse to EMP the detector. A few thousand (if you had the power supply) to cook the trooper. Ever see an apple explode from a monopulse radar antenna sweep? Way cool. An old tech friend of mine used to use an apple (or pear) on a wood pole as crude test of power output when servicing DEW line stuff decades ago. Makes one wonder what it would do to nearby seagulls. I'll see if I can find the old photo he took. > Even with high antenna gain (17dB isn't unreasonable) the path loss is pretty high, > and you might see a couple mW at the detector, which is probably sitting in 10-100mW normally.
