I cannot get a 'Canadian' version of their multistandard VCR (and lots of other high end toys) because the Canadian company doesn't carry it. And if I import it, I have NO WARRANTY. Basically the company (Sony, Nikon, Canon, etc.) refuses to service a product from which THEY didn't get a profit, even though their parent company did. What a scam. Actually, it isn't so much a scam as protection. If they did service everything that THEY did NOT sell then people would be buying the products elswhere if they can get them at a lower cost. However, I would think the parent company would stand behind the device, although you would probably have to return it directly to them. Industrial machine manufacturers do the same thing. If you can get a warranty it will be from the OEM not the distributor or local importer. If you take the machine, or in this case device, to the local people they will charge you just as if it wasn't a brand new one. But, I do admit on the surface it doesn't make a lot of sense. If the importers of consumer devices work anything like those of industrial machinery that I am familiar with. They purchase the items from the manufacturer, then mark them up for profit. No sale, no profit, no allowance for a warranty.
