mail servers also try over and over, usually for at least a day before they give up. i've looked at the source of emails that were delayed before and you often see a large time lag somewhere along the route where there were problems for a while though sometimes that's just from one machine (one that your mail is going through) being down for a few hours. sometimes email takes seconds or a second, sometimes it takes minutes or hours from the same people.
