X/Y/Zmodem, kermit, SLIP, and PPP all have (or are) methods of transmitting binary data over async comm links. On a single hop link between your PC and a micro, there's no reason at all not to send binary data. The conversions to ascii (PCNet, UUCP, Hex) are all designed to deal with more complicated links, storage, editting, and perhaps multiple protocols and technologies in the data path.
