Wholly irrelevant, and I forget the finer details, but the scariest thing of heard of like that was done a few years ago here when they had a medical emergency on remote islands about ?12 hours flying time south of NZ. They needed a medical helicopter and team but wanted to keep in radio contact. So they flew a light plane with it at extreme altitude to act as a radio repeater to the helicopter. AFAIR engine failure in the helicopter would have been fatal for all concerned. Patient was successfully rescued and returned. My brain offers the following details which may be wrong: Bad shark attack. Unusual for Antarctic waters where it occurred. Lady scientist diver - fully recovered in due course.
