This, and using Mozilla (the full version, or the browser-only version Firefox) for browsing. It tends to get hijacked a lot less, and since it is not so tightly integrated with the system it tends not to get problematic -- IF you need to get rid of something you don't know how, it's just a reinstall of the browser.
