Something like an adpcm codec at each end or even perhaps as simple as dpcm
would suffice. Can be simple small and cheap. But not as much so as having
the feature built in already. A pulse code modulator can be done with a few
ICs - possibly only 1 (especially so if it's a custom part or a PIC).

What data rate do you have available for the voice channel?
