8 pin DIPs have certain advantages during prototyping.  Besides, I'll
bet there are at least a few existing 508 and 629 customers who are
happy to get a cheaper part with less memory, even if it does lack the
2 IOs.

The flash versions of the 54/508/etc is a very interesting development
as well...
