How do you intend to measure distance once you get the directionality problem sorted out? Sound (ultrasonics) is useful because the trip times involved are in the millisecond range. Using light the times are in the nanosecond range. There are other method using eg phase measurement. None of these are suited to the use of an IR detector module.
