Hi Bob, Yes, I can see how the data sheet can confuse people since at one point Microchip uses the phrase "recommended values" and then they state that the user should consult the specifications of the crystal manufacturer: "Recommended values of C1 and C2 are identical to the ranges tested table." "These values are for design guidance only....Since each crystal has its own characteristics, the user should consult the crystal manufacturer for appropriate values of external components." But the second quote above really sums it all up and drives the point home to follow the specifications of the crystal manufacturer.
