It may or may not matter but

How many lines do you have available to do this ? 1 ? 2 ? 4 ? 8 ?

Is you have the UART available in each PIC ?

Are they running on the same crystal ?

Are they on the same voltage ?

What is the distance between them and the environment ie is there
the possibility of signal corruption ?

And so on.......
