I use Lurker (http://lurker.sourceforge.net/) for watching mailing lists.
It threads all the discussions, and provides a page that shows the
recently active threads.  The searching and nagivation is far better than
most web based archives.

If you have a Linux box with a web server available, it's pretty easy to
set up.
