I think the cause of the problem stems from the the statement

$5 says that the router doesn't forward his DNS requests. According to
the rest of the world, his zone controller has disappeared (probably
without even a "connection refused" which would cause it to go to
secondary) this would cause mitvma.mit.edu to be unable to find
nerdulator.net, and to timeout in the process.
