I have a problem with transistor pinouts too, it seems like everyone says their in a different order. I've come to the conclusion that (at least with the pack of RadioShack 2N2222 type transistor and the regular PNP transistors) the pinout is just like it looks in the schematic. For an NPN open collector thingy, I connect pin 1(flat part facing you, the rightmost pin) to the +5v (via a pullup), connect pin 3(the leftmost pin) to ground, and use the middle pin to toggle the transistor on and off. I could be totally wrong, but it works for me every single time and it doesn't work the other way around. Maybe transistors can go both ways to some degree? Again, I could be wrong, this is just what I noticed.
