The information I have seen suggests that 1 of the 3 pins is a common, and a short from this to 1 the other 2 is focus and to the other is release. See:- http://www.diff.net/peter/photography/canon_n3_connector_info.shtml I have a 10D and love it, but am annoyed at having to find #40 for a remote release, given that it is a cheepo plastic switch, 2 foot of wire and a custom connector. Does anybody know where to get the connectors? One web site I've seen suggested making one by placing socket pins over the pins in the plug, giving a quick squirt of WD40, and then injecting Araldite into the thing.
