Doesn't answer you question maybe, but...
You can control the tone ("pitch") of the signal using the PWM module,
yes, but how do you control the volume (without using some external
parts) ?

Now, trying to answer you question... :-)
If the frequencies are not to high, you could run a software-PWM routine.
