Just a thought... where will you be standing in relation to the camera? IR receivers are highly directional AFAIK so you may need several and is your film/digi camera sensitive to Infra-Red light? If you use RF instead then direction isn't a problem and you could have the transmitter in your palm or pocket for self-portraits.
