> Does it have a sad ending? Yes. Schliemann claims to have discovered Homer's Troy by reading the Iliad, but in fact someone else did but didn't have the funds to dig and Schliemann sponsored him and then took over. He digs right through Homer's Troy thinking it's at the bottom of the pile when it's really 5 or 6 city layers up. He thereby destroy some valuable material. He finds jewellery here and there and makes some fake pieces as well. He hides it all and illegally takes it out of Turkey back to Germany. He announces that he found it all together in a wall and says that it is the treasure mentioned in the Iliad. His wife models the fancier pieces for publicity photos. It is displayed in Germany but disappears at the end of WW2 and is not heard of again. UNTIL a few years ago the Rusians announce that they have found it in one of their museum storage rooms somewhere and put it on display briefly. And its not heard of ever again.
