I see, you are planning for your next trip with your family... ;-) /Ake -----Ursprungligt meddelande----- Fr=E5n: pic microcontroller discussion list [mailto:PICLIST@MITVMA.MIT.EDU]F=F6r Russell McMahon Skickat: den 13 maj 2004 13:27 Till: PICLIST@MITVMA.MIT.EDU =C4mne: [OT:] **** REAL **** men go sledding (& something to learn) One of the more amazingly droll, how to do it checklists I've seen. *Well* worth a look, even for non-sledders ie (most of us) http://www.thepoles.com/expguide/gear.htm The rest of the site appears equally stunning (quick glance only.) For something relevant to our daily lives, note their "10 golden rules" http://www.thepoles.com/expguide/golden.htm Number 9 got me. The others basically say, go hard, do it do it do it, keep doing it, don't stop. In that context, number 9 is quite different and surprising. Well worth reflecting on. _____________ Just a sample: Tent: It is a good idea to prepare your tent before departure. The tent should be semi-assembled, folded on top of your sled as you travel and you'll be able to pitch it in minutes, which is very helpful in a snow blizzard. Tape your tent poles in position with electrical or duct tape so they don't slip out of the tunnels. Tie the snow flukes (4-6 pcs) permanently to the lines. Attach a 4 m long and 4 mm thick line to the windward front of the tent with a loop at the end for fast attachment in a ski or a sled. Attach big handles to the zippers. You'll need snow flaps for Antarctica, but not for the Arctic. ... _____________ ... The best protection against polar bears is a gun. Shotgun is the standard of Canada and a Magnum handheld the choice of Russia. The shotgun should be 15 calibers and not greased. Keep it outside the tent at all times or it will ice up. Tie a string to it leading into the tent for fast reach. Protect it in a durable plastic bag and carry it in a padded gun cover with a shoulder strap. Carry it with you at all times, don't leave it on one sled when returning for the other. ________________ I found this site while checking the probable value of some Gortex mittens on a local auction site. * - & yes, I know you can be a real man without having to do this sort of thing. Just as well ;-) -- http://www.piclist.com hint: The PICList is archived three different ways. See http://www.piclist.com/#archives for details.
