And make SURE you fit a load resistor! RP A simple homemade CT is a small mains transformer (2-8W) with a piece of mains rated insulation wire threaded through the window between the coil and the core, to form a half turn (thread through one window, then out through the other). Pick a transformer that allows this. Old 'bell' transformers usually fit this description. The turns ratio is respectable so even small currents can be measured (lightbulb, dimmer etc). Typically the turns ratio is at least 200:1 and higher. Pay special attention to not nicking the mains cable at the sharp edges of the core, and ground the core if possible.
