Yes, definitely, I'm aware of this fact. What I meant to convey was a mindset: How can one write defensive code or secure code if one does not know what they are defending against? Besides the money factor, there's the possibility that people just didn't anticipate some of these security problems. It appears to be an evolutionary process, and there has been a lot of emphasis on improvement in security recently for obvious reasons.
