I'd disagree with that assessment...The absolute worst that could occur from GE would be the complete domination of the surface of the planet by, say, "supercorn", to the exclusion of all other species (plant, animal, and otherwise), whereas the worst possible result of a full scale nuclear war is a neat distribution of highly toxic radioactive heavy elements across the surface of the planet, even to the depths of the oceans. In short, GE could return Earth to a primordial stage with limited life, but a (really) vigorous nuclear war has the chance to not only obliterate all life but actually render Earth incapable of producing new life.
